Elbridge G. Spaulding Free Frank (1809-1897). Known as the "Father of the Greenbacks." He supported the idea for the first U.S. currency not backed by gold or silver, thus helping to keep the Union economy aloat during the Civil War. He introduced bill authorizing treasury notes payable on demand, 1861, resultant law provided for the issuance of the legal tender notes or greenbacks to the amount of $150 million.
